Job Overview A Nurse Practitioner (NP) who provides medical evaluation and treatment of John Muir Behavioral Health Center patients in collaboration with and under the direction of the Supervising Physician. The NP performs duties according to standardized procedures which have been developed collaboratively by John Muir Behavioral Health Center administration, medical staff, nursing, Supervising Physician, and Nurse Practitioners and approved by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Board. The NP is a registered nurse who possesses additional preparation and skills in physical diagnosis, psycho-social assessment, and management of health-illness needs. The NP assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients, provides information to patients on health maintenance and disease prevention, and counseling. The NP provides healthcare in a collegial relationship with physicians to patients at John Muir Behavioral Health Center. Essential Functions Medical Services * Employs appropriate screening and diagnostic strategies, laboratory tests, x-rays and other studies as needed. Accurately interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests. * Prioritizes health care needs/problems and formulates an appropriate action plan with therapeutic interventions for simple problems. * Collaborates and consuls with Supervising Physician to collect data for less common and more complicated problems as per Standardized Procedure. * Completes history and physical examinations on new patients within 24 hours. * Documents initial and ongoing progress note upon completion of history and physical. * Documents accurately and concisely according to accepted system utilized * Prescribes appropriate medications within legal authorization and according to standardized procedures. * Responds quickly and uses good judgment in unusual or emergent situations. Recognizes when it is necessary to call medical consulting supervisor for consultation and direction. * Communicates in medical record using professional terminology, format, and technology. * Provides follow-up care and re-evaluation of patients as necessary and in a timely manner. Responds to requests for consultation in a timely manner. Provides education to patients and families * Instructs and counsels patients regarding matters pertaining to their physical health, such as medications, diets, social habits, family planning, normal growth and development, aging, and understanding and managing their diseases. * Coaches patients for behavioral changes to promote health and prevent disease. * Participates in in-service training of nursing staff. Standards of Professional Performance * Practice Evaluation Evaluates own practice in relation to standards, statutes, and regulations. * Compliant with policies and procedures, laws, regulatory and accrediting standards, including TJC, CDPH, and BRN. * Engages in self-evaluation, identifies strengths, opportunities for improvement, sets and achieves realistic goals. * Is open & receptive to feedback from peers and supervisors. * Participates in peer review, provides colleagues with formal or informal constructive feedback. * Evidence-Based Practice Integrates evidence and research findings into practice, utilizes evidence-based knowledge to guide practice. * Utilizes best available evidence including research findings to guide practice decisions. * Integrates EBP/research into clinical practice. * Reads research articles and applies new information to nursing practice. * Uses research in the development or revisions of policies, procedures, and/or standards. * Critically analyzes and interprets research for application to practice. * Ethical Practice and Privacy Adheres to the Nursing Code of Ethics, Patient Bill of Rights, JMH Values and Goals. * Delivers care in a manner that preserves privacy, autonomy, dignity, rights, and honors the uniqueness of the individual. * Identifies and appropriately refers cases to Ethics Committee. Participates in resolving ethical issues. * Takes appropriate action regarding illegal, inappropriate, or unethical behavior * Maintains a therapeutic patient-nurse relationship with appropriate professional role boundaries. Work Rules and Practices * Works within the framework of John Muir Health and department policies and procedures. * Adheres to John Muir Health and department policies and procedures regarding sick time, attendance, rest and meal breaks, standards of professional appearance, and safety. !*! * Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program (MSN or DNP) * Experience functioning in a Nurse Practitioner role. * Current R.N. license in the state of California * Nurse Practitioner certification by the California Board of Registered Nursing * National Certification by recognized board- American Nurses Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. * Has furnishing privileges and DEA license with the California Board of Registered Nursing * Basic Life Support (BLS) * Demonst
