Job Description

Job Summary:

The RN-Utilization Mgmt, provides health care services regarding admissions, case management, discharge planning and utilization review.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews admissions and service requests within assigned unit for prospective, concurrent and retrospective medical necessity and/or compliance with reimbursement policy criteria.
  • Provides case management and/or consultation for complex cases.
  • Assists departmental staff with issues related to coding, medical records/documentation, precertification, reimbursement and claim denials/appeals.
  • Assesses and coordinates discharge planning needs with healthcare team members.
  • Prepares statistical analysis and utilization review reports as necessary.
  • Coordinates an interdisciplinary approach to support continuity of care.
  • Provides utilization management, transfer coordination, discharge planning, and issuance of all appropriate authorizations for covered services as needed for members.
  • Consults with physicians, health care providers, and outside agencies regarding continued care and treatment or hospitalization.
  • Coordinates identification and reporting of potential high dollar/utilization cases to reinsurer and finance department for appropriate reserve allocation.
  • Clarifies health plan medical benefits, policies and procedures for members, physicians, medical office staff, contract providers and outside agencies.
  • Actively participates in the discussion and notification processes that result from the clinical utilization reviews with the requestors. Identifies and recommends opportunities for cost savings and improving the quality of care across the continuum.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Licenses/Certifications/Registration:

  • Required Credential(s):
    • Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Texas Board of Nursing .

Education:

  • HS or Equivalent
    • High School diploma or equivalent is required upon date of hire or job transfer date Bachelors of Science in Nursing is preferred and Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) is required, including demonstrated experience in utilization management, facility concurrent review, discharge planning and transfer coordination, upon date of hire or job transfer date. Minimum of three (3) years of managed care or equivalent health plan experience is preferred.
